Which are Argentina’s busiest airlines?
SUBSCRIBE TO ON THE FLY
Located on the southern cone of South America, Argentina, from a transportation perspective, could be considered as geographically cursed. Its capital Buenos Aires is a long widebody flight away from most of the world’s largest economic centers, including the major cities of North America, Europe, and Asia. Tokyo and Beijing are roughly 17,000 kilometers away (about 11,000 miles), more than even B787s or A350s can handle (with full payloads).
Nevertheless, Argentina, and Buenos Aires specifically, is an important market for many airlines around the world.
But which are the busiest airlines operating in Argentina? As data from Diio by Cirium shows, the country has three of its own airlines competing for traffic, namely Aerolineas Argentinas and the low-cost carriers Flybondi and Jetsmart.
LATAM, which recently closed its Argentine subsidiary, remains the largest foreign carrier in the market, measured by seats scheduled this quarter. Just behind it is Gol, though Gol, Avianca, Viva, and Sky together are larger than LATAM (those four airlines are planning to combine under one holding company, pending regulatory approval).
IAG, thanks to Iberia and British Airways, is Argentina’s busiest airline from outside of Latin America. The US giant American, too, has a sizeable presence. Buenos Aires even has service from as far away as Addis Ababa, Dubai, and Istanbul, though in all cases via Brazil.
What are the most popular international destinations from Argentina? Diio shows Sao Paulo unsurprisingly ranking first by seat capacity. It’s followed by Santiago, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, Lima, Panama City, and Miami.
