In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand was the eighth largest tourist market in the world. That’s according to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), ranking by number of international visitor arrivals. Nearly 40m people visited Thailand in 2019, slightly more than the U.K.

Thailand only received 11m international visitors in 2022, as pandemic travel restrictions remained in place for most of the year. But tourism is now booming again, and Thailand’s government estimates that about 25m to 30m people will arrive this year. Airlines, naturally, are happy to see the market recovering.

An analysis of Diio Cirium data for the April-to-June quarter shows that Thai Airways and the AirAsia group have the most seats flying abroad from Thailand. Emirates is the country’s largest airline from outside the region.

Where are all these tourists coming from? The chart below uses Diio Cirium data to rank the largest source markets for Thailand’s air traffic, using total scheduled seats for the second quarter. As you can see, China is still the most important, despite being far from full recovery.
