GLOBAL OTP SUMMARY – November 2024
Global flight cancellations were down by 9% in November, with 39,387 flights cancelled compared to 43,484 in October. Asia-Pacific had the highest number of flight cancellations in November, accounting for 58% of the global total.
North America region saw a significant decrease of 42% in flight cancellations in November, with only 4,699 flights canceled. This accounted for just 12% of the global cancellations.
Saudia (SV) is the new global leader in November with an OTP of 89.85%. King Khalid International Airport (RUH), a main hub for Saudia, concluded the month in fourth place under the Global airport category with an OTP of 88.39%.
Delta Air Lines (DL) ended the month as the runner-up in the Global airlines category with an OTP of 88.97%. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Delta’s main hub, delivered an OTP of 86.71%.
Aeromexico (AM) took the third place position with an OTP of 87.90%, a decrease of nearly 4 points from the previous month’s performance of 91.88%. The airline’s main hub, Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), also experienced a decrease of nearly 6 points (89.69% in October) and turned in an OTP of 83.77%.
Qatar Airways (QR) took the fourth place position with an OTP of 85.77%. This was an improvement of nearly 8 points over October’s OTP of 78.15%. Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH), the main hub for Qatar, ended the month with an OTP of 87.57%, and ranked 7th in the Global Airports category.
American Airlines (AA) entered the top 5 ranking for the first time this year, and secured the fifth-place position with an OTP of 85.31%. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), the main hub for American Airlines, concluded the month with an OTP of 79.32%. This was a decrease of nearly 3 points from 82.26% in October.
Regional Highlights – Cancellations Report
Asia Pacific
The region saw a 7% increase in flight cancellations in November, with 22,923 flights canceled compared to 21,349 in October. This led to an overall decrease in OTP of up to 5% for both airlines and airports.
Hainan Airlines (HU), maintained its position as the regional leader this month with an OTP of 84.08%, a decrease of 3 points from 87.14% in October. Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), one of the main hubs for Hainan Airlines, ended the month with an OTP of 88.34%. Similarly, this was a decrease of more than 4 points compared to the previous month’s performance of 92.79%.
North America
Thanksgiving air travel reached a record high with over 232,000 flights between November 24
– 27 in the US with minimal flight disruptions reported. The region saw a 42% decrease in flight cancellations, with 4,699 flights cancelled, compared to 8,113 in October. The region’s airlines and airports also had high on-time performance scores although some declined slightly from October.
Delta Air Lines (DL) maintained its position as the regional leader with an OTP of 88.97%, a slight decrease from October’s OTP of 90.53%. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the main hub for Delta, ended the month with an OTP of 86.71%.
Europe
Severe rainfall and flash floods continued in parts of eastern Spain including, Catalonia, Valencia, and Andalusia which disrupted airline and airport operations in November. Despite the weather conditions in eastern Spain, flight cancellations in Europe decreased by 18% in November, with 5,861 cancelled flights in contrast to 7,121 in October.
Austrian (OS) is this month’s regional leader with an OTP 88.23%. This was a near 4-point improvement over October’s performance of 84.74%. Vienna International Airport (VIE), the main hub for Austrian, also made a near 9-point improvement in OTP and delivered 83.54%, compared to 75.10% in October.
Latin America
Latin America saw an 8% increase in flight cancellations in November, with 4,206 flights canceled compared to 3,887 in October. This uptick in cancellations negatively impacted on-time performance for airlines and airports this month in the region.
Aeromexico (AM) maintained its position as the regional leader in November, with an OTP of 87.90%. However, this was a decrease of nearly 4 points from the previous month’s OTP of 91.88%. The airline’s main hub, Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), also experienced a decrease of nearly 6 points and turned in an OTP of 83.77%.
Middle East & Africa
Flight cancellations in the Middle East and Africa region decreased by 44% in November, with only 1,698 flights canceled compared to 3,014 in October. This region accounted for a mere 4% of the total global flight cancellations last month.
Safair (FA) retained its position as the regional leader for Middle East & Africa in November with an impressive OTP of 94.48%. This was an improvement of 2 points compared to 92.47% in October. Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), a hub for Safair, ended the month with an OTP of 88.99%.
Low-Cost Carriers
Safair (FA) led the category in November with an OTP of 94.48%. Flyadeal (F3) came in second place with an OTP of 90.48%, a slight decrease from 90.76% in October. Three North American carriers rounded the top 5, with Southwest Airlines (WN), Spirit Airlines (NK) and Allegiant Air (G4) taking third, fourth and the fifth spots respectively.
