Global flight cancellations were down by 3% in December, with 38,400 flights cancelled compared to 39,387 in November. Asia-Pacific region accounted for a substantial 50% of the global flight cancellations in December.

GLOBAL OTP SUMMARY – December 2024
Global flight cancellations were down by 3% in December, with 38,400 flights cancelled compared to 39,387 in November. Asia-Pacific region accounted for a substantial 50% of the global flight cancellations in December.
Hainan Airlines (HU) is the new global leader with an outstanding OTP of 90.19%. Hainan takes this position from Saudia after making a 6 point improvement from November (84.08%). Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), a main hub for Hainan, concluded December with an OTP of 89.62% compared to 88.34% in November.
Saudia (SV) came in second-place position with an OTP of 89.21%, slightly down from 89.85% in November. King Khalid International Airport (RUH), the main hub for Saudia, dominated both the Global and Large airport categories. The airport delivered an OTP of 88.08%.
Qatar Airways (QR) took the third-place position with an OTP of 85.82%. Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH), the main hub for Qatar, ended the month in second place under both the Global and Large airport categories. The airport turned in an OTP of 86.51% compared to 87.57% in November.
Aeromexico (AM) followed in fourth-place position with an OTP of 84.66%, a decrease of more than 3 points from the previous month’s performance of 87.90%. The airline’s main hub, Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), concluded the month in seventh-place position under the Global airports category. The airport delivered an OTP of 82.03%, a decrease of nearly 2 points from the previous month’s OTP of 83.77%.
Iberia (IB) secured the fifth-place position with an OTP of 83.50%, an improvement of 4 points November. Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), the main hub for Iberia, ended the month with an OTP of 76.81%. This was an increase of more than 5 points compared to 71.39% in November.
Regional Highlights – Cancellations Report
Asia Pacific
The region witnessed a 17% decrease in flight cancellations in December, with 19,068 flights canceled compared to 22,923 in November. This led to an overall improvement in OTP for most airlines and airports in the region for the month of December.
Hainan Airlines (HU) maintained its position as the regional leader this month with an impressive OTP of 90.19%, an increase of more than 6 points from 84.08% in November. Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), a hub for Hainan, concluded the month with an OTP of 89.62%.
North America
North America region saw a 50% increase in flight cancellations in December, with 7,045 flights canceled compared to 4,699 in November. This increase in flight cancellations resulted in notable decreases in on-time performance scores among the region’s airports and carriers.
Delta Air Lines (DL) maintained its position as the regional leader with an OTP of 80.20%, a decrease of nearly 9 points from 88.97% in November. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the main hub for Delta, ended the month with an OTP of 76.53%.
Europe
Flight cancellations in Europe increased by 13% in December, with 6,629 flights cancelled compared to 5,861 in November. Overall, Europe accounted for 17% of the total global flight cancellations last month.
Iberia Express (I2) is the new in Europe with an OTP of 86.12%, an improvement of more than 6 points from 79.78% in November. Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), the main hub for Iberia Express and Iberia, ended the month with an OTP of 76.81%. This was an increase of more than 5 points compared to 71.39% in November.
Latin America
Flight cancellation in Latin America was down by 15% with 3,595 flights canceled in December compared to 4,206 in November. As a result, most airlines and airports improved their OTP scores in December.
Copa Airlines (CM) is the new regional leader with an OTP of 89.63%, an increase of nearly 9 points compared to 80.93% in November. Panama Tocumen International Airport (PTY), the main hub for Copa, led the Medium Airports category and delivered an impressive OTP of 91.24%. Similarly, this was an improvement of more than 5 points from 86.17% in November.
Middle East & Africa
Flight cancellations in the Middle East and Africa region increased by 21% in December, with 2,063 flights canceled compared to 1,698 in November. However, this only accounted for a mere 6% of the total global flight cancellations in December.
Royal Jordanian (RJ) is the new regional leader with a notable OTP of 91.62%, a slight increase from November’s OTP of 90.85%. Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), the main hub for the airline, delivered an OTP of 87.89% compared to 88.63%.
Low-Cost Carriers
Safair (FA) led the category in December with an OTP of 90.39%. Iberia Express (I2) came in second place with an OTP of 86.12%, a 6-point decrease from 79.78% in November.
Vueling (VY) closely followed Iberia Express in third place with an OTP of 83.30%. Wizz Air Malta (W4) and Wizz Air (W6) took the fourth and fifth spots respectively.
