    GLOBAL SUMMARY – May 2024

    The latest data paints a varying picture of On-Time performance across the regions. While the Middle East & Africa showed notable improvements, North America, and Latin America faced challenges, as the top-ranking airlines exhibited decreases in OTP. One possible reason may be due to the increase of flight cancellations from both these regions.

    Aeromexico (AM) maintained its top position as the global leader in May with an OTP of 86.75% despite the 2-point decrease in OTP. Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), the primary hub for Aeromexico, experienced a 4-points decrease, and concluded the month with an OTP of 82.53%.

    With a slight improvement in score, LATAM Airlines (LA) climbed to second place with an OTP of 86.65%. Similarly, Arturo Merino Benitez Airport (SCL), a hub for LATAM Airlines, had a slight improvement in score and finished the month in fifth place under the Global airports category with an OTP of 85.86%.

    JAL (JL) came in third place with an OTP of 86.40%, a near 2-point decrease over last month’s OTP of 88.17%. Haneda Airport (HND) also had a near 2-point decrease and concluded the month in fourth place under the global airports category with an OTP of 85.99%.

    Iberia (IB) maintained its fourth-place position in the Global category with an OTP of 86.17%. This was slight decrease from the previous month. Similarly, Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), the main hub for Iberia concluded the month with an OTP of 79.06%, down by almost 2-points compared to previous month’s OTP of 80.86%.

    Saudia (SV) made a huge jump from fifteenth position last month to fifth place following a 6-point increase in OTP (86.09%). This secures Saudia as the most improved airline in May. King Khalid International Airport (RUH), the main hub of Saudia, finished the month in first place under the global airports category. The airport achieved an OTP of 88.23%, up from 86.77% in April.

    Asia Pacific

    The number of flights cancelled in the region decreased by 5% in May. 31,912 flights were canceled this month compared to 33,592 in April.

    JAL (JL) led the region again this month with an OTP of 86.40%, a slight decline from last month’s performance (88.17%). Haneda Airport (HND), a hub for JAL, concluded the month in fourth place under the global airports category. The airport achieved an OTP of 85.99%. Down from 87.85% in April.

    Vietnam Airlines (VN) closely followed in second place with an OTP of 85.11%, a 3-point increase over last month’s OTP of 81.85%. Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), a hub
    for Vietnam Airlines, concluded the month with an OTP of 80.57%, following a 7-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 73.18%.

    ANA (NH) finished the month in third place with an OTP of 84.89%, a decrease of 2-points compared to the previous month’s performance (87.21%). Osaka International Airport (ITM) concluded the month in third place after achieving an OTP of 92.91%, a slight decrease from April.

    After finishing eight last month, Air New Zealand (NZ) took the fourth place with an OTP of 83.99%, a 3-point improvement over last month’s performance of 80.80%. Thai AirAsia (FD) secured the fifth place after achieving an OTP of 83.55%, a 3-point improvement from last month’s OTP of 80.41%.

    North America

    Flight cancellations surged in the month of May for the North America Region. The region experienced an 84% increase in flight cancellations compared to April. 11,491 flights were canceled during the month of May, compared to 6,217 flights in April. The increase in cancellations may have contributed to the decline in OTP for most of the airlines and airports in the region.

    Delta Air Lines (DL) led the region with an OTP of 81.04%. This was a near 5-point decrease from last month’s OTP of 85.73%. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) had an almost 8-point decrease in OTP from the previous month (82.46%). The airport concluded the month with an OTP of 74.83%.

    Alaska Airlines (AS) concluded May in second place with an OTP of 79.04%, only a slight decrease from April’s OTP of 80.43%. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), the
    primary hub of Alaska, concluded the May with an OTP of 78.99%, a 4-point decrease from last month.

    WestJet (WS) continued to maintain it’s new found footing and came in third place with an OTP of 77.55%, but followed the trend with a 5-point decrease compared to 82.70% in April. JetBlue (B6) closely followed in fourth place with an OTP of 76.58%, a near 2-point decrease from last month’s performance (78.30%). Similarly, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), a hub for JetBlue, also experienced a near 2-point decrease in OTP. The airport concluded the month with an OTP of 78.89%.

    United Airlines (UA) took the fifth place with an OTP of 75.95%. This month’s performance was a 6-point decrease compared to previous month’s OTP of 82.24%. O’Hare International Airport (ORD) experienced a devastating 12-point decrease (82.42%) and turned in an OTP of 70.34%.

    Europe

    Bucking the trend, Europe witnessed a 21% decrease in flight cancellations in May. The region cancelled 5,584 flights this month compared to 7,103 in April. Norwegian (DY) is the new leader in the region this month with an OTP of 89.53%, a near 4-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 85.59%. Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL), a main hub for Norwegian, finished the month in second place under the global airports category. The airport achieved an OTP of 87.97%, up from 85.84% in April.

    Iberia (IB) came in second place with an OTP of 86.17%, a slight decrease from last month’s OTP of 86.91%. Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), concluded the month with an OTP of 79.06%, a near 2 points decrease from April’s performance.

    SAS (SK) concluded the month in third place with an OTP of 84.83%, a near 2-point increase from last month. Similarly, Copenhagen Airport (CPH), a hub for SAS, experience a near2-point improvement over April’s performance and concluded the month with an OTP of 82.85%.

    Vueling (VY) remained in fourth place with an OTP of 83.73%, a decrease of 3 points compared to April’s OTP of 87.18%. Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), a hub for Vueling, also had a near 5-point decrease in OTP. The airport concluded May with an OTP of 70.52%, compared to 75.24% in April.

    LOT Polish Airlines (LO) took the fifth-place position with an OTP of 82.36%, a near 5-point decrease compared to April’s OTP of 87.26%.

    Latin America

    The total number of flights cancelled rose by 35% in May. 3,584 flights were cancelled in May compared to 2,649 in April which resulted to marginal decreases in OTP for the top-ranking airlines.

    Copa Airlines (CM) remained as the leader in the Latin America region with an impressive OTP of 90.24%. Similarly, Tocumen International Airport (PTY), a hub for Copa, concluded May with a notable OTP of 90.70%. The airport secured the fifth place position in the medium airport category.

    Gol (G3) secured the second-place position with an OTP of 89.82%, a slight increase over April’s performance. Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) concluded the month in sixth place under the global airports category with an OTP 84.80%, a near 2-point improvement over last month.

    Aerolineas Argentinas (AR) followed closely in third place with an OTP of 89.22%. This was a near 5-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 84.71%, making it the region’s most improved airline in May. Jorge Newbery Airport (AEP), main hub of the airline, finished the month in fourth place under the medium airports category. The airports achieved an OTP of 91.31%, which was a near 6-point improvement compared to 85.43% in April.

    Caribbean Airlines (BW) concluded the month in fourth place with an OTP of 87.96%, a
    2-point decline compared to April (90.11%). With an OTP of 86.75%, Aeromexico (AM) the global leader this month, secured the fifth-place position in the Latin America region.

    Middle East & Africa

    Despite the geopolitical tensions and conflicts in certain parts of the Middle East, the region experienced a 38% decline in the number of flights cancelled in May with 2,272 canceled compared to 3,675 in April. Globally, airlines in the Middle East and Africa region shown the greatest improvement in performance in May.

    Safair (FA) is back as the regional leader in the region this month with an impressive OTP of 96.81%, a 5-point improvement from last month’s OTP of 91.82%. O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), the main hub of Safair and Airlink, ended the month with an OTP of 93.09%, up by nearly 9 points from last month’s OTP of 84.64%. Oman Air (WY) closely followed Safair in second place with an OTP of 94.35%. This was more than 5-points increase over April’s OTP of 88.72%. Muscat International Airport (MCT), main hub of Oman, concluded the month with an OTP of 92.10%, a near 2-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 90.34%.

    Airlink (4Z), formerly South African Airlink, secured the third place position with an outstanding OTP of 92.90%. This was more than 6-points in improvement from April’s OTP of 86.14%, making it the region’s most improved airline in May.

    Royal Jordanian (RJ) took the fourth place with an OTP of 90.82%, a near 4-point increase compared to April’s OTP of 87.16%. Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), main hub of the airline in Amman, Jordan, ended the month with an OTP of 86.82%. This was a 4-point improvement from last month’s OTP of 82.77%.

    Low-Cost Carriers

    Iberia Express is still the leader in the low-cost carrier category with an OTP of 90.24%, up from 89.89% in April. With a slight improvement in OTP, Gol (G3) took the second-place position with an OTP of 89.82%, up from 88.88% in April.

    Norwegian (DY) came in third place with an OTP of 89.53%, a near 4-point increase from 85.59% in April. Following a near 3-point increase, Peach Aviation (MM) climbed from ninth to fourth place in May with an OTP of 87.12%. In fifth place, Azul (AD) secured the fifth-place position and turned in an OTP of 84.79%, down from 85.83% in April.


    GLOBAL SUMMARY – April 2024

    In April, the top-ranking airlines and airports across the globe showed further improvements in their OTP performance from the previous month. Notably, the APAC region stands out this month, recording the largest increases in OTP among all other regions. The global leader in April however, emerged from the Latin America region. Aeromexico (AM) came in with an OTP of 88.83% and regained its position as the global leader. Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), the primary hub for Aeromexico placed fifth in the global airports category with an OTP of 86.54%.

    JAL (JL) made an astonishing improvement this month and finished in second place with an OTP of 88.17%, a near 10-point increase over last month (78.40%) and 19th place. Haneda Airport (HND), which serves as the main hub for JAL in Tokyo, also came in second place in the global airports category with an OTP of 87.85%, a 7-point increase over last month’s OTP of 80.20%.

    ANA (NH) followed in third place with an OTP of 87.21%, a 5-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 82.12%. Narita International Airport (NRT), ANA’s key international hub, followed the positive trend and concluded the month with an OTP of 84.20%, a 4-point increase over last month’s OTP of 80.09%. Iberia (IB) took the fourth-place position with an OTP of 86.91%, a near 2-point increase over last month. Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) the main hub for the airline concluded the month with an OTP of 80.86%, also with a near 2-point improvement compared to last month’s OTP of 79.40%.

    LATAM Airlines (LA) once again finished the month in fifth place with an OTP of 86.61%. Arturo Merino Benitez Airport (SCL), a hub for LATAM Airlines, finished the month in sixth place with an OTP of 86.40%.

    Asia Pacific

    The number of flights cancelled in the region increased by 20% last month, reaching 33,592, compared to 27,821 in March. Airlines and airports in the region took advantage of the limited operations to improve on their on-time performance this month. After months of being displaced from the top position, JAL (JL) emerged this month as the regional leader with an OTP of 88.17%, a near 10-point improvement compared to last month’s OTP of 78.40%.
    ANA (NH) closely followed in second place with an OTP of 87.21%, an increase of 5-points compared to March’s OTP of 82.12%. Similarly, Osaka International Airport (ITM), a main hub for ANA, was the leader in the medium airports category and achieved an impressive OTP of 94.10%, a 5-point increase from last month’s OTP of 88.63%.
    AirAsia (AK) secured the third-place position with an OTP of 85.48%. With a near 7-point improvement over last month’s performance (77.46%), Peach Aviation (MM) took the fourth-place spot with an OTP of 84.19%. Vietnam Airlines (VN) safely secured the fifth spot with an OTP of 81.85%, a near 3-point increase over last month (78.98%). Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), a hub for Vietnam Airlines in Hanoi, concluded the month with an OTP of 73.18%.

    North America

    The number of canceled flights in the region decreased by 19% to 6,217 from 7,721 last month. Delta Air Lines (DL) remains the undisputed leader in the North American region with an OTP of 85.73%, a slight improvement over March OTP of 85.54%. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the main hub for Delta, also made a slight improvement this month and achieved an OTP of 82.46%.

    A remarkable 18-point improvement propelled WestJet (WS) from tenth place last month to second place this month. The Canadian-based airline finished the month with an OTP of 82.70%, accelerating from last month’s OTP (64.18%). Similarly, Calgary International Airport (YYC), the main hub for WestJet, delivered an impressive OTP of 84.61%, following a 15-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 69.48%.

    From seventh place last month, Spirit Airlines (NK) ascended to third place with an OTP
    of 82.66%. An impressive 11-point improvement from last month’s OTP of 70.78%. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Spirit’s most popular and busiest hub for domestic flights, delivered an OTP of 76.72%. Following the positive trend, the airport also experienced 11-point increase in OTP this month compared to March OTP of 65.21%.
    United Airlines (UA) secured the fourth place position this month with an OTP of 82.24%, a slight decrease compared to last month. Similarly, O’Hare International Airport (ORD), the largest hub for United, experienced a slight decline in performance and turned in an OTP of 82.42% this month.

    Alaska Airlines (AS) finished the month in fifth place with an OTP of 80.43%, up from 78.79% last month.

    Europe

    Europe saw a 14% decline in the number of flights cancelled this month, with just 6,983 cancelled in March compared to 8,186 in February. Austrian Airlines (OS) retained its dominance in the region with an impressive OTP of 90.37%, albeit a 2.59% decrease compared to last month. Vienna International Airport (VIE), the main hub for Austrian Airlines, concluded the month with an OTP of 85.17%, a decrease of 4-points compared to February’s OTP of 89.39%. LOT Polish Airlines (LO) took the second-place spot with an OTP of 89.15%, a near 3-point increase over February’s performance. Aegean Airlines (A3) followed in third place with an OTP of 88.42%, a slight decrease over last month’s OTP (89.67%). Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (ATH), a hub for Aegean concluded the month with an OTP of 85.46%, a nearly 3-point decrease compared to last month’s OTP of 88.12%. An astounding 13-point increase in this month’s OTP score propelled Norwegian Air Shuttle (DY) to fourth place with an OTP of 88.34% compared to last month’s 74.72%. Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL), the main hub for Norwegian Air Shuttle, demonstrated a solid OTP of 85.85%, a 7-point increase over February’s OTP of 78.74%. SunExpress (XQ), a new name in the Europe top ranking, secured the fifth spot with an OTP of 87.90%, a near 4-point increase compared to February. Antalya Airport (AYT), the base for SunExpress achieved an OTP of 86.88%, a near 4-point improvement compared to February OTP of 83.35%.

    Latin America

    The number of cancelled flights in the region decreased by 3%, with just 2,649 impacted compared to 2,745 in March. Copa Airlines (CM) continued its reign in the region with an OTP of 90.31%. The Panama-based airline has been dominating the region since December last year. Tocumen International Airport (PTY), the main hub for Copa Airlines, concluded the month in second-place position under the medium airports category with an OTP of 91.06%.

    Caribbean Airlines (BW) took the second spot with an OTP of 90.11%, a near 2-point increase over March OTP of 88.50%. Gol (G3) secured the third-place position in the region this month with an OTP of 88.88%, a slight improvement over the previous month. Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), one of the major hubs of Gol, concluded the month with an OTP of 83.04%, up from 79.93% in March.

    Aeromexico (AM), the global airline leader this month placed fourth in the region with
    an OTP of 88.83%. This demonstrates the competitive nature of OTP in the Latin America region, with airlines recording some of the highest scores this month. LATAM Airlines (LA) finished the month in fifth place in the region and the global airline category with an OTP of 86.61%.

    Middle East & Africa

    Heightened tensions between Israel and Iran which resulted in temporary closure of airspace and airline restrictions in the region caused a major spike in flight cancellations in April. The Middle East and Africa region had the highest number of canceled flights among all regions this month with 3,675 flights canceled, compared to just 1950 in March. The spike in flight cancellations also negatively impacted the performance of airlines in the region.

    Despite an almost 5-point decrease from last month’s performance, Oman Air (WY) ended with an OTP of 88.72%. Muscat International Airport (MCT), the main hub for Oman Air, also experienced a 3-point decrease in OTP (90.34%) compared to March (93.45%).

    Kuwait Airways (KU) climbed from sixth place to second place this month with an OTP of 88.22%, a near 3-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 85.65%. Royal Jordanian (RJ) retained its position in third place with an OTP of 87.16%, a near 3-point decrease compared to March’s OTP of 89.68%.

    Saudia (SV) safely secured the fourth-place position with an OTP of 79.55%, a 5-point decrease from last month’s OTP of 84.63%. King Khalid International Airport (RUH), the main hub of Saudia, finished the month in fourth place under the global airports category. The airport achieved an OTP of 86.77% following a minor decline in March’s OTP of 87.32%. Gulf Air (GF) descended from fourth place to fifth place with an OTP of 78.84%, a decrease of 9 points compared to March’s OTP of 88.35%.

    Low-Cost Carriers

    Iberia Express (I2) emerged as the new leader in the low-cost carrier category this month with an OTP of 89.89%. Gol (G3) remained in second place with an OTP of 88.88%, a slight increase over last month.

    An impressive 9-point improvement in performance propelled Allegiant Air (G4) to fourth place with an OTP of 86.17%. Azul (AD) secured the fifth-place position after achieving an OTP of 85.83%. This was a near 3-point increase from last month’s OTP of 83.35%.

    GLOBAL SUMMARY – March 2024

    Qatar Airways (QR) is this month’s global airline leader with an OTP of 87.36%, a 4-point increase over February’s performance. Pegasus Airlines (PC), a new name in the top-ranking list, has emerged as the runner-up in the global airline category with an OTP of 87.14%. Pegasus Airlines also showed the highest performance improvement among the top rankers in March, with an impressive 10-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 76.80%. Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SAW), which serves as a hub for Pegasus Airlines, improved by nearly 9-points compared to previous month’s performance of 75.97%. The airport concluded the month with an OTP of 84.81%.

    After finishing in seventh place last month, Avianca (AV) ascended to third place with an OTP of 87.05%. Despite a near four-point decline in performance this month, Aeromexico (AM) still held on to the fourth-place position with an OTP of 87.02%. Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), the primary hub for Aeromexico placed fourth in the global airports category this month with an OTP of 85.93%. Similarly, the airport also saw a 2-point decrease over last month’s OTP of 88.36%. LATAM Airlines (LA) came in fifth place this month with an OTP of 85.99%. Arturo Merino Benitez Airport (SCL), the region’s largest and busiest international airport, which serves carriers including LATAM Airlines, Avianca and Aeromexico, improved by more than 5 points from February and placed third in the global airport category with an OTP of 86.95%.

    Asia Pacific

    The top-ranking airlines in APAC this month showed significant improvements in their OTP performance over last month. Singapore Airlines (SQ) maintained its dominance in the region with an OTP of 88.31%, a 4-point increase over February’s OTP of 84.12%. AirAsia (AK) secured the second-place position this month with an OTP of 85.33%; a near 5-point increase over last month. Philippine Airlines (PR) finished the month in third place and with an OTP of 85.28%. The 7-point improvement from February’s performance, also positioned Philippine Airlines as the most improved airline in the region. Garuda Indonesia (GA) took fourth place this month in the region with an OTP of 83.48% and was followed closely by Cathay Pacific (CX) with an OTP of 83.13%.
    Similarly, major airports in the region including Changi International Airport (SIN), Haneda Airport (HND), Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), Incheon International Airport (ICN), and Osaka International Airport (ITM) showed remarkable improvements in OTP compared to the previous month’s performance. Changi International Airport (SIN) concluded the month with an OTP of 81.59%, which was a 6-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 75.57%. Haneda Airport (HND) recorded an OTP of 80.20% and Osaka International Airport (ITM) had an OTP of 88.63%. Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) had a 9-point increase in OTP and ended the month with an OTP of 78.71%. Incheon International Airport (ICN) recorded an OTP of 80.12%, which was a near 7-point increase over last month’s OTP of 73.58%.

    North America

    Unlike their counterparts in the Asia-Pacific region, North American airlines and airports experienced some decline in performance this month. The region also had a 33% increase in flight cancellations. Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, and SkyWest Airlines were responsible for a significant number of flight cancellations.
    For the third consecutive month in 2024, Delta Air Lines (DL) is the leader in the North American region. This month’s performance score of 85.54% was however a near 4-point decline over last month’s OTP of 89.27%. United Airlines (UA) followed Delta in second place with an OTP of 82.82%. Similarly, this was also a decrease of 2-points in performance over February. Alaska Airlines (AS) finished the month with an OTP of 78.79% and in third place. This was a 3-point decrease compared to their OTP of 81.91% in February. With a six-point decrease in performance, American Airlines (AA) dropped to fourth place this month with an OTP of 78.49%. American was followed by Southwest Airlines (WN) in fifth place with an OTP of 75.59%, which was a 6-point decrease over last month’s OTP of 81.88%.

    Major airports in the region also experienced significant declines in on-time performance. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), the primary hub for American Airlines saw a massive 12-point decline in OTP and finished the quarter with an OTP of 70.65%. George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) saw a near 8-point decrease in OTP and finished the month with 77.83%. Miami International Airport (MIA) also saw an 8-point decrease (78.19%) and recorded an OTP of 70.16%. John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) finished the month with an OTP of 78.81%, a 4-point decrease compared to 83.12% from last month. O’Hare International Airport (ORD) ended the month with an OTP of 83.17%, a 4-point decrease compared to 87.50% from February. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) concluded the month with an OTP of 84.64%, which was a 3-point decrease over last month’s performance of 88.01%.

    Europe

    Europe saw a 14% decline in the number of flights cancelled this month, with just 6,983 cancelled in March compared to 8,186 in February.     The region continued to show improvement in operations this month with a 6% decrease in the number of reported flights cancelled (2,745) compared to 2,938 last month. Copa Airlines (CM) maintained its dominance in the region with a remarkable OTP of 90.26%. The Panama-based airline has dominated the Latin America region for three straight months this year. Tocumen International Airport (PTY), the main hub for Copa Airlines, also delivered an impressive OTP of 91.65%. With a 6-point improvement over last month’s performance (82.43%), Gol (G3) secured the second-place position with an OTP of 88.62%. The airline also showed the most improvement among the region’s top five carriers, with a 6-point increase from February’s OTP of 82.43%. Caribbean Airlines (BW) closely followed GOL in third place with an OTP of 88.50%. Avianca (AV) took the fourth-place position with an OTP of 87.05%, a 3-point improvement over February. After a near 4-point decline from last month, Aeromexico (AM) descended from second to fifth place with an OTP of 87.02%. Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), the main hub of Aeromexico, delivered an OTP of 85.93%. Similarly, the airport also experienced a 2-point decrease compared to February’s OTP of 88.36%.

    Following the same trend, major airports serving as hubs for airlines such as Copa, Caribbean, GOL, Avianca, Aeromexico, and LATAM all showed improvements in their March performance compared to February. Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM) made huge gains with an OTP of 89.41%, which was a near 7-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 82.88%. Arturo Merino Benitez Airport (SCL) delivered a 5-point increase in their OTP with 86.95% in March, up from 81.51% in February. Jose Joaquin de Olmedo Airport (GYE) turned in an OTP of 91.67%, a 2-point improvement from last month’s OTP of 89.57%. Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) showed a near 2-point improvement from February with an OTP of 91.91%.

    Middle East & Africa

    Middle East & Africa witnessed a 12% surge in the number of flights canceled in March. The region had 1,950 flights canceled compared to 1,739 last month. Safair (FA) was still the undisputed leader in both the Middle East & Africa region and the low-cost carrier category in March. The airline concluded the month with an outstanding OTP of 96.67%, up nearly three points from 93.96% in February. This was also the highest performance score among all carriers across all regions and categories. Oman Air (WY) followed in second place, also with an impressive OTP of 93.32%. This was a 5-point increase compared to last month’s performance. With a remarkable thirteen-point increase over last month’s performance, Royal Jordanian (RJ) climbed from seventh to third place this month with an OTP of 89.68%. Gulf Air (GF) remained in fourth place with an OTP of 88.35%, a 4-point increase over February’s OTP of 84.08%. Qatar Airways (QR) finished the month in fifth place with an OTP of 87.36%, a 4-point increase over the previous month’s OTP of 83.27%.

    Airports in the region also showed huge improvements in their performance this month. King Khalid International Airport (RUH) secured the second-place spot in the global airports category with an OTP of 87.32% following a 4-point increase from last month’s OTP of 83.13%. Kuwait International Airport (KWI) delivered an OTP of 87.32%, up nearly 7 points from February’s performance of 80.51%. Meanwhile, Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) turned in an OTP of 91.61%, a 2-point increase over last month’s OTP of 89.57%.

    Low-Cost Carriers

    Safair (FA) maintained its dominance in the category with an OTP of 96.67%, a nearly 3-point increase over the previous month’s performance. Since August last 2023, the low-cost airline has been the unrivaled leader in the Low-Cost category. Gol (G3) secured the second-place position with an OTP of 88.62%. With 13-point improvement in performance, Norwegian Air Shuttle (DY) came in third place with an OTP of 88.34% followed by Air Baltic (BT) with an OTP of 87.77%. Completing the list was Pegasus
    (PC) in fifth place with an OTP of 87.14%, a 10-point increase over last month’s OTP of 76.80%.

    GLOBAL SUMMARY – February 2024

    Aeromexico (AM) was the leader and the most improved airline in February, with a 90.66% OTP, a 12.5 point increase in OTP over January’s performance (78.13%). Delta Air Lines (DL) secured the second-place position with an OTP of 89.27%, a near 10-point improvement from the previous month. Iberia (IB) took the third-place spot with an OTP of 88.08%. With a near 7-point increase over the previous month’s performance, United Airlines (UA) secured the fourth position with an OTP of 84.91%. United was followed closely by Azul (AD) in fifth place with an OTP of 84.83%.

    In APAC, Singapore Airlines (SQ) topped the region with an OTP of 84.12%, followed by ANA (NH) in second place with an OTP of 82.85%. Cathay Pacific (CX) secured the third-place position with an OTP of 82.03%, and was closely followed by JAL (JL) with an OTP of 81.41%. Garuda Indonesia (GA) took the fifth-place position with an OTP of 81.09%. A significant 21% decrease in the number of flights cancelled was observed in the region for February, compared to January.

    In North America, in February, a staggering 77% decrease in cancelled flights led to OTP improvements of seven to ten points by the top performing North American airlines. Delta Air Lines (DL) remained the dominating carrier in the region, with an OTP of 89.27%. This is a near 10-point increase over the previous month’s OTP of 79.97%. United Airlines (UA) took second place with an OTP of 84.91%, which was almost a
    7-point improvement over the previous month’s performance. A remarkable 10-point improvement propelled American Airlines (AA) from fifth to third place this month, with an OTP of 84.43%. With a 7- point improvement over January, Alaska Airlines (AS) secured the fourth place with an OTP of 81.91%. Alaska was closely followed by Southwest Airlines (WN) with an OTP of 81.88%, this was nearly an 8- point increase compared to last month’s OTP of 74.31%.

    In Europe, the majority of airlines in the region significantly improved their OTP in February, while the total number of flights canceled decreased by 7%. Austrian Airlines (OS) maintained its top-ranking position again this month, with an impressive OTP of 92.96%, which was a 6-point increase over last month’s OTP of 86.95%. Iberia Express (I2) also remained in the second place position this month with an OTP of 90.15%, followed by Aegean Airlines (A3) with an OTP of 89.67%. ITA Airways (AZ), joined the ranking this month in fourth place with an OTP of 89.32%, a 3-point improvement compared to last month’s performance. Vueling (VY) took fifth place with an OTP of 89.11%.

    In Latin America, Latin America saw a 35% decrease in flight cancellations in February, from 4,452 in January to 2,938 flights this month. Copa Airlines (CM) concluded the month with an impressive OTP of 91.66%, leading the Latin America region. With an outstanding 12-point improvement over last month’s performance, Aeromexico (AM) moved from seventh to second place and finished the month with an OTP of 90.66%. Caribbean Airlines (BW) took third place with an OTP of 87.94%, Azul (AD) secured the fourth place with an OTP of 84.83%, this was nearly a 4-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 80.93%. Avianca (AV) took fifth place with an OTP of 83.88%.

    In the Middle East and Africa, A marginal decrease of 1-2 points in OTP was observed by the majority of airlines, despite a 35% decrease in the number of cancelled flights in the region. Safair (FA) concluded the month strong with an OTP of 93.96%, leading both the Middle East & Africa region and the Low-Cost Carrier category. Oman Air (WY) remained in second place with an OTP of 88.11%. Gulf Air (GF) took the third place spot with an OTP of 84.08%. Qatar Airways (QR) took fourth place with an OTP of 83.27%. Saudia (SV) came in fifth place with an OTP of 81.56%.

    For LCCs, For seven months running, Safair (FA) has been the undisputed leader in this category. The carrier concluded the month with an outstanding OTP 93.96%. Spanish low-cost airline, Iberia Express (I2), remained in second place with an OTP of 90.15%, followed by Vueling (VY) with an OTP of 89.11%. Two new names completed the top-ranking list in February, with Eurowings (EW) finishing in fourth place with an OTP of 87.16%, and Wizz Air Malta (W4) taking fifth place with an OTP of 85.30%.

    GLOBAL SUMMARY – January 2024

    Madrid-based Iberia (IB) topped the global ranking in January with an OTP of 87.29%, more than 3-points improvement over December. This was a particularly remarkable feat for Iberia, considering the fact that the airline also faced operational challenges in January. A series of ground staff strikes resulted in the cancellations of over 400 flights impacting nearly 46,000 passengers. Qatar Airways (QR) maintained its second-place position with an OTP of 84.92%. The Doha-based airline continues to execute on its 2024 network expansion plans with the December announcement of increased services and destinations in Europe this summer. With a slight improvement in OTP (84.48%) over December (83.34%), Saudia (SV) moved from sixth-place to secure the third-place from United Airlines (UA). SA Avianca (AV) returned to the top 5 ranking in fourth-place with an OTP of 84.01%, a near 2-point improvement from December. LATAM Airlines (LA) made an impressive climb to fifth-place with an OTP of 81.88%.

    In APAC, pilots and ground staff shortage have been attributed to increased flight cancellations in the APAC region. Although the number of flight cancellations in January was 26% less than in December 2023, APAC still led all regions with more than 10,000 of their flights cancelled in January. Despite these operational challenges, the top five ranking airlines all made improvements in their January on-time performance scores from December. Philippine Airlines (PR) was the regional leader in January with an OTP of 86.85%, a near 4-point improvement from December’s performance. AirAsia (AK), who ranked fifth in December, took the second-place spot after a 2-point improvement in OTP (83.98%). Vietnam Airlines (VN) finished the month in third place with an OTP of 83.85%, after a near 4-points improvement over December’s performance of 79.94%. Singapore Airlines (SQ) secured the fourth spot with an OTP of 82.96%. Thai AirAsia (FD) took fifth place with an OTP of 82.82%, a slight decrease in performance compared to December (84.09%).

    In North America, January winter conditions which affected the east and west coast regions caused thousands of flights to be canceled and delayed, which led to astounding 400% increase in the number of flights canceled compared to December 2023. These cancellations and operational challenges negatively impacted the on-time performance scores of North American carriers in January. Following the success of 2023 Annual Review, Delta Air Lines (DL) remained as the regional leader with an OTP of 79.97%. This, however, was an almost 10-point decrease compared to last month (89.57%). The winter storm caused a significant rise in flight cancellations impacting JFK (a Delta hub), with 15% of flights canceled and delayed. United Airlines (UA) remained in the second spot with an OTP of 78.61%, a 7-point decline from December. Alaska Airlines (AS) started the year in the headlines after a midair door incident caused a global grounding of the Boeing 737-9Max. However, the airline was still able to secure the third spot in the region with an OTP of 74.53%. This was a notable 8-point decrease compared to December’s OTP of 83.12%.

    In Europe, with ongoing workforce issues facing the region, Europe had a significant 25% decrease in flight cancellations in January compared to December 2023. Most of the top-ranking airlines in the region made improvements in their OTP scores in January over December. The Greece flag carrier, Aegean Airlines (A3), claimed the top spot in January with an OTP of 90.02%, a near 5-point increase over December. With a near 4-point improvement over the previous month, Iberia Express (I2) took second-place with an OTP of 89.54%. The Spanish low-cost carrier was the regional leader in the 2023 Cirium Annual On-Time Performance Review. Vueling (VY) took third-place with an OTP of 87.36%. Iberia (IB) remained in fourth-place with an OTP of 87.29%, an almost 3-point increase over December’s OTP of 84.30%. Despite finishing the month in fifth-place, Austrian (OS) set a new regional record with a whopping 14-point increase over December – from 72.75% to 86.95%.

    In Latin America, like its North American counterparts, the Latin American region also had an increase (50%) in the total number of flights cancelled in January compared to December. However, the number of actual flights cancelled (1,496) was less compared to North America and did not have any significant impact on the on-time performance scores of the top-ranking airlines in the region. Copa Airlines (CM), the new leader in the Latin America region, concluded January with an OTP of 89.39%. This was nearly a 3-point increase over December’s performance. The airline’s operations were also impacted by the grounding of the Boeing 737-9Max. An impressive 11-point improvement propelled Caribbean Airlines (BW) from sixth to second-place in January, with an OTP of 88.73%. With an OTP of 84.01%, the 2023 Cirium Annual On-Time Performance Review global airline winner, SA Avianca (AV) came in third-place in January. LATAM Airlines (LA) remained in fourth-place with an OTP of 81.88%. Aerolineas Argentinas (AR) took fifth-place with an OTP of 81.65%, a massive 11-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 70.24%.

    In the Middle East and Africa, Despite a 10% increase in flight cancellations, Middle East & Africa region recorded the lowest number of flights cancelled among all regions in January. Just under 250 flights were cancelled in the region in January. However, some of the region’s top-ranking airlines declined in their OTP scores for the month. Safair (FA) concluded January with an impressive OTP of 94.59%, leading both the Middle East & Africa region and the Low-Cost Carrier categories. Oman Air (WY), the regional leader in the 2023 Cirium On-Time Performance Review, took second-place this month with an OTP result of 86.78%, a 2-point decline from last month’s performance. Qatar Airways (QR) came in third-place again with an OTP of 84.92%. This was a near 3-point decline in performance compared to December’s OTP of 87.74%. Saudia (SV) held the fourth spot with an OTP of 84.48%, a slight increase from the previous month’s performance. Following closely behind was Royal Jordanian (RJ) with an OTP of 80.24%, a near 4-point decrease compared to the previous month’s performance.

    For LCCs, Safair (FA), the category winner of the Cirium 2023 Annual On-Time Performance Review continued to dominate the low-cost carrier category with an OTP of 94.59%. Iberia Express (I2) secured the second spot with an OTP of 89.54%, a 4-point increase over last month’s performance. Vueling (VY) followed in third-place with an OTP of 87.36%. Hong Kong Express (UO) joined the ranking in fourth-place with an OTP of 84.66%. This was a notable 8-point improvement over last month’s OTP of 76.78%. AirAsia (AK) secured the fifth-place ranking with an OTP of 83.98%, a 2-point increase over the previous month’s OTP of 81.93%.
