What’s the latest in the US airline industry?
US airlines just finished reporting their financial results for the final quarter of 2021. It was another tough year for sure. Altogether, the 11 largest US carriers (not including regionals) suffered nearly $16b in losses not counting government aid and other one-time accounting gains.
The fourth quarter, however, did show some bright spots. Five of the 11 airlines—Delta, Southwest, Alaska, Allegiant and Sun Country—earned adjusted operating profits.
More would have joined them were it not for the impact of the Omicron variant on bookings and staffing. With Omicron’s impact now fading, it’s starting to feel like a post-COVID-19 era might finally be here. Indeed, US airlines appear optimistic about the upcoming spring and summer seasons.
