As the aviation industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic, leaders who have had the best practices in operations regain the top spots in most of the world.
However, new leaders have emerged in Europe and Latin America indicating some airlines and airports have leveraged the disruption and more may be waiting in the wings for their place at the top of world.
The competition for the top spot in the Global Mainline category has been between ANA, Japan Airlines (JAL) and Azul all year round. With Japan’s air traffic increasing, ANA’s ability to hold on to the top spot this month shows the airline continues to manage its operation very well. With an OTP of 90.13%, ANA takes the top spot from JAL, who lands at number four this month. With an OTP of 87.31%, United Airlines (UA) makes its debut in the top 5 ranking this year at number 5.
APAC
In addition to being the leader in the Global Mainline and Network categories, ANA (NH) is also the leader in the APAC Mainline and Network categories this month. With an OTP of 90.13% ANA takes the APAC top spot from Spring Airlines (9C) and JAL (JL). IndiGo (6E) is back in the top 5 ranking this month after its last appearance in February.
North America
Delta Air Lines (DL) continues its leadership in the North America Mainline and Network categories once again this month with an OTP of 88.27%. Delta once again was followed closely by United Airlines (UA) with an OTP of 87.31%.
Europe
Austrian (OS) is the new leader in the Europe Mainline category. With an OTP of 88.68%, the airline takes the top spot from Norwegian Air Shuttle. In the Network category however, Iberia (IB) continues its reign, dominating for the last six consecutive months.
Latin America
There is no slowing Sky (H2) down in the Latin America Mainline category. The Chile-based airline returns this month (92.08%) as the leader in this category for the third time in a row. Azul (AD) once again follows closely in the number two spot with an OTP of 89.39%: a slight improvement over last month. In the Network category however, Azul leads with Sky Airlines trailing behind with an OTP of (87.01%).
Middle East and Africa
Oman Air (WY) returns as the leader in the MEA Mainline category with an OTP of 96.11%. Royal Jordanian (RJ) once again follows Oman Air closely in the number two spot with an OTP of 93.51%: a remarkable improvement from last month (88.92%).
Low-Cost Carriers
Solaseed (6J) returns as the leader in the Low-Cost category with an OTP of 96.11%; a slight improvement from last month
(95.50%). StarFlyer (7G) once again follows closely in the number two spot with an OTP of 95.19%.
Haneda Airport (HND) returns this month as the leader in the Global Airport category with an OTP of 90.41%, a slight decline from last month (91.18%). Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) also returns to the top five ranking this month with an OTP of 86.99%, after missing for the last five months.
Large
Osaka International Airport (ITM) returns as the leader in the Large Airport category this month with an OTP of 94.29%. ITM has taken the top spot eight times this year. Only being challenged by Fukuoka Airport (FUK) in August and Auckland Airport (AKL) in January.
Medium
Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) is the leader in the Medium Airport category this month. With an OTP of 95.14%, NGO returns as the leader this month after briefly losing the title to Sendai Airport (SDJ) last month. The airport has dominated the lead eight times this year. Boise Air Terminal (BOI) makes its first appearance in the top 5 this year with an OTP of 91.17%.
Small
Bromma Airport (BMA) is the new leader in the Small Airport category this month. With an OTP of 95.16% this month, BMA takes the top spot from Miyazaki Airport (KMI).

After a challenging summer travel season — a return to normal
Airlines are back – completing scheduled flights with minimal cancellations (with some exceptions, notably Hurricane Ian in the US) and delivering travelers to their destinations on-time. Some usual OTP leaders are also back in the top five ranking after struggling through the last few months. Move over Azul and ANA, Japan Airlines (JAL) is the new leader in the Global Mainline category. With an OTP of 91.02%, the airline takes the top spot from Azul who has held the position three times this year. JAL has also held the spot four times this year. ANA follows JAL closely at number two with an OTP of 90.08%. Delta Air Lines (DL) is back in the top 5 ranking this month with an OTP of 89.21% after disappearing for the last four months.
APAC
Spring Airlines (9C) is the new leader in the Asia Pacific Mainline category this month. With an OTP of 93.73%, takes the top spot from Thai AirAsia who has dominated this category the last five consecutive months. China United Airlines (KN) makes its debut in the top five ranking this year at number 3 and an OTP of 92.04%. In the Network category, it is important to note that Philippine Airlines (PR), Virgin Australia and Qantas have been constants in the top 5 ranking this year.
North America
With almost 6 points above last month’s performance, Delta Air Lines (DL) is once again the leader in the North America Mainline category. The Atlanta-based airline has held the top spot in this category six times this year. Delta was followed by United Airlines (UA) with an OTP of 86.87%, a remarkable improvement in performance from last month (79.83).
Europe
Norwegian Air Shuttle (DY) is the new leader in the Europe Mainline category. With an OTP of 83.87%, the airline takes the top spot from Iberia, who has dominated the category for the last three consecutive months.With an OTP of 79.70%, SAS (SK) makes its debut in the top 5 ranking in both the Mainline and Network categories..
Latin America
Sky (H2) returns as the leader in the Latin America Mainline category this month with an OTP of 89.30%. Azul (AD) follows closely in the number two spot with an OTP of 88.05%. Azul. Aeromexico (AM) makes its debut in the top 5 ranking in this category at number 5. With an OTP of 86.20% Aeromexico also returns at number 5 in the Network category.
Middle East and Africa
Oman Air (WY) is the new leader in the MEA Mainline category. With an OTP of 93.37%, Oman Air takes the top spot from Safair (FA) who has dominated for the last four consecutive months. Royal Jordanian (RJ) follows Oman Air closely in the number two spot with an OTP of 88.92%. Emirates and Qatar return in the top 5 ranking this month at numbers 4 and 5 respectively.
Low-Cost Carriers
After months of continued dominance by Safair (SFR) and StarFlyer (SFJ), Solaseed is the new leader in the Low-Cost category. Solaseed (SNJ) takes the top spot with an OTP of 95.50%. StarFlyer however follows closely in the number two spot with an OTP of 95.25%. StarFlyer has held the top spot four times this year.
Haneda Airport (HND) has been the undisputed leader in the Global Airport category for eight consecutive months. With an improvement in OTP this month (91.18%) over last month (85.66%), the airport demonstrates consistency in operational excellence. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) makes its debut in the top five this year in third place with an OTP of 88.39%.
Large
Osaka International Airport (ITM) reclaims its top title fromFukuoka Airport (FUK) this month with an OTP of 94.44%, almost five points above its performance last month (89.82%). ITM has held the leader position in this category seven times this year. After making its first appearance in the top 5 last month, Naha Airport (OKA) is back and again as the runner up with an OTP of 92.63%.
Medium
Sendai Airport (SDJ) is the new leader in the Medium Airport category. With an OTP of 89.74%, the airport takes the top spot from Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) who held on to the title for the last four consecutive months. Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR), Trodheim Airport Vaernes (TDR) and Spokane International Airport (GEG) are all making their first appearances in the top 5 this year with OTP of 89.48%, 89.10% and 88.95% respectively.
Small
Miyazaki Airport (KMI) is back as the leader in the Small Airport category. With an OTP of 95.43% this month, KMI takes the top spot back from Painushima Ishigaki Airport (ISG). In a very highly competitive category, KMI has managed to hold the top spot four times so far this year, more than any other airport in this category.

Operational performance continues to improve gradually across the globe
Operational performance continues to improve gradually across the globe. However as noted last month, South America continues to be unbothered by the summer operational challenges.
With Azul, Avianca and LATAM taking the top spots in the Global Mainline category this month, the region continues to show strength, resilience and excellence in operations. The region’s El Dorado International Airport (BOG) also appeared second in the Global Airport category this month.

Azul (AD) continues to hold on to its lead in the Global Mainline category with an OTP of 89.65%, a slight improvement from last month (89.02%). With Avianca (AV) and LATAM Airlines (LA) following at #2 (OTP 87.47%) and #3 (OTP 85.56%) respectively, the Latin American carriers have dominated this month. The story is true and consistent in the Global Network category with Azul and Avianca taking the top and second spots respectively.
APAC
Thai AirAsia (FD) Thai AirAsia (FD) continues to show strength and dominance in
the Asia Pacific mainline category. With an OTP of 88.13%, Thai AirAsia is once again the leader in this category. AirAsia India (I5) debuts in the top 5 at number 2 with an OTP of 87.80%. After making its debut in the top 5 last month (83.15%), Malaysia Airlines (MH) is back with the leaders at number 3. They also show an improvement in OTP at 86.28%. ANA and JAL continue their six months dominance in the Network
category at number 1 and 2 respectively.
North America
With improvement to their OTP (83.68%) Delta (DL) is back this month as the leader of the North America Mainline category after being knocked off in July by Alaska (AS). While the regular OTP leaders in this category continue to play catch up with each other all year long, Frontier (F9) meanwhile has quietly been appearing in the top 5 for the last three consecutive months. In the Network category, WestJet (WS) has been a constant in the top 5 for the last six months.
Europe
Iberia (IB) continues to dominate the Mainline category. The airline also demonstrated an improvement in OTP this month (83.91%) versus last month (81.19%). ITA Airways (AZ) is back in the top 5 category this month after struggling to make the ranking the last two months. ITA had held the number one spot from January through April but hasn’t been able to maintain the lead these summer months. KLM (KL) is back in the top 5 ranking in the Network category this month with an OTP of 79.26%.
Middle East and Africa
Safair (FA) continues its dominance in the region and the Global Low-cost carrier category. The airline however, showed a decline in its OTP performance this month (95.47%) versus last month (97.0%). Qatar (QR) makes a surprising debut in the top 5 ranking this month with an OTP of 77.86%.
For two consecutive months, Haneda Airport (HND) has been experiencing a decline in its OTP performance (June – 93.13%, July – 88.72%, August – 85.66%). The airport however continues to lead in the Global Airport category. El Dorado International Airport (BOG) follows HND closely this month with an OTP of 85.0%. Indira Ghandi International Airport (DEL) makes a surprise first appearance in the top 5 this month at number four,
with an OTP of 83.19%
Large
After playing runner-up the last two months, Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is the new leader in the Large Airport category with an OTP of 91.49%. A spot that has been tightly held by Osaka International Airport (ITM) for six months. FUK was followed closely by Naha Airport (OKA) with an OTP of 91.45%. This is also OKA’s first appearance in the top 5 this year.
Medium
Holding on to the lead for three consecutive months, Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) comes back this month with an OTP of 91.97%. This is a slight drop from its performance last month (94.09%). After missing from the top 5 the last two months, Tenerife North Airport (TNF) is back, and at number 3 spot with an OTP of 89.70%. Alfonso B. Aragon Airport (CLO) makes its debut in the top 5 this year at number 5, with an OTP of 88.95%.
Small
After making its debut in the top 5 last month at number 4, Painushima Ishikagi Airport (ISG) is back as the new leader in this category. With an OTP of 92.99%, ISG takes the top spot from Miyazaki Airport (KMI). Bromma Airport (BMA) makes a surprise debut in the top 5 at number at number 3, with an OTP of 92.21%.
